Modern RF power amplifier testing, especially in the mmWave domain, comes with a unique set of challenges—ranging from high test costs to system complexity. This case study shares how KEC tackled these issues by designing and delivering a scalable and automated RF ATE solution tailored to our customer’s needs.
Customer Challenges
The customer needed a robust testing platform that could:
Integrate multiple RF instruments seamlessly.
Ensure accurate and consistent measurements.
Handle a wide range of test requirements for different DUTs (Devices Under Test).
Reduce manual setup time, human error, and high equipment costs.
The solution
To maximize test station utilization, we designed a flexible hardware setup allowing the same ATE to support multiple DUTs through interchangeable test fixtures. This approach allowed customer to use one test setup for 4 different DUTs, reducing equipment costs.
We implemented a modular software architecture using NI TestStand and LabVIEW, enabling easy customization and expansion. The system managed instrument communication, executed test sequences, and allowed operators to run different DUTs with minimal changes. This ensured scalability and repeatability of the tests.
We developed custom instrument drivers to support various equipment vendors, enabling seamless integration of signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and switches. By implementing parameterized, repeatable test sequences with robust error handling, we ensured consistent, traceable results across setups and operators. Automated path loss calibration routines were also introduced to correct for fixture and cable losses, ensuring accurate measurements even at mmWave frequencies. Test reports are automatically generated for review and deeper analysis.
Results
This solution helped the customer reduce their test time by more than 20 times, at the same time, improved test accuracy and repeatability. The customer thus deployed multiple stations overseas, saving test cost and time.
At KEC, we create scalable, and adaptable test solutions that help customers cut costs, improve accuracy and product delivery. If you are struggling with time-consuming setups, inconsistent results, or high equipment costs, talk to us for a tailored solution.
